Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical, minimally invasive approach for naturally treating inflammation and injuries to joints, ligaments, and tendons. PRP is a portion of blood processed by centrifugation, resulting in a higher concentration of platelets. Platelets are a component of blood that is typically responsible for clotting but also contain growth factors that aid in and promote healing and decrease inflammation. The ultimate goal of PRP therapy is to enhance the body’s natural mechanism for healing.
What happens during the procedure?
For PRP, your pet is dropped off at the clinic for the day. Your pet gets a thorough exam to determine the affected joints that need to be treated and to ensure they are healthy enough overall for sedation. Often, especially in our senior pets, multiple joints need to be treated. X-rays are taken to determine the extent of the injury, look for osteoarthritis formation, etc. A blood sample is taken and centrifuged to obtain platelet-rich plasma. The PRP is then injected directly into the area of injury. Your pet then recovers from the sedation and goes home the same day!
The effects of PRP can usually be seen within two weeks and will last, on average, between 4-6 months. Occasionally, pets need to have the injections repeated 2-4 weeks after the initial injection, especially with significant osteoarthritic changes.
Benefits of PRP
PRP is autologous, meaning it comes directly from the pet. Thus, the risk of side effects is low. PRP can be incredibly beneficial for animals that have had previous reactions to oral medications. Often, the therapy can eliminate the need for long-term oral medications. PRP can also be used in conjunction with oral pain medications for additional relief.
PRP can be used to treat:
- Osteoarthritis
- CCL injuries not pursuing surgical correction and/or in adjunct with surgical correction
- Tendon injuries
- Soft tissue wounds
We are very excited to offer this new service at IVC and would love to set up a consultation to discuss PRP and your pet!
